The Science of Acupuncture
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a medical system practised for over 2,500 years that supports the body’s natural ability to heal and restore balance. The body is understood as an interconnected, energetic system. Vital energy, known as Qi, flows through pathways called meridians that connect organs, tissues and body systems. When this flow of qi energy becomes disrupted, an imbalance can occur, and symptoms may arise. Acupuncture works by influencing these pathways to help restore harmony and support both physical and somatic wellbeing.
My approach is holistic and tailored to the individual. Each treatment begins with a detailed consultation where I consider your symptoms, lifestyle, medical history and overall health. By addressing both the root cause of imbalance and its physical manifestations, treatment aims to relieve symptoms while supporting long-term health.
From a Western medical perspective, acupuncture’s effects are thought to involve several physiological processes. Stimulation of acupuncture points activates peripheral nerves, which can trigger the release of endorphins and other neurochemicals that help relieve pain and reduce inflammation. Acupuncture also improves blood circulation, supporting tissue repair and reducing swelling. Research suggests it can influence a number of systems within the body, including the nervous, immune, circulatory and endocrine systems. Brain imaging studies show that acupuncture can affect areas of the brain involved in pain perception while influencing neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine, which play a role in mood, pain sensitivity, and the body’s somatic regulation.
As a member of the British Acupuncture Council (BAcC), I practise to the highest standards of professional training, safety and ethics.
